“Fanfare is such a fun typeface,” says Toshi Omagari, who revived the design for The Wolpe Collection. “It was my happiest discovery when I was digging through the Monotype archive. I came across it and had to check the designer’s name.” No wonder: Fanfare is modern, light and playful – not what you’d expect from an 80-year old design.

From the original, very heavy weight design, Omagari started by creating a black weight, followed by four lighter weights for Wolpe Fanfare, preserving the character of the letterforms all the way down to a thin version. “I wanted to do more than digitize the original weight,” he says. “It’s surprisingly modern, and its skeleton, its basic structure, is so beautiful.”

The new design packs more into a small space than most typefaces. It’s a natural for publication and advertising design. With displays capable of revealing fine details such as Fanfare’s subtly slanted baseline, its lovely forms will easily translate to mobile devices. With an extended European character set that includes Greek and Cyrillic language support, Wolpe Fanfare can speak in many languages.

Berthold Wolpe began working on Albertus in 1932, at the encouragement of Stanley Morison. Some characters have oversized serifs, others have very different weights, and some even look inconsistent with the other characters in the set. “This is the typeface that taught me a lesson,” says Toshi Omagari, who revived the design for The Wolpe Collection. “You don’t have to be super-precise in the design of every character, it can still work.” Omagari kept every convention-defying detail of the original Pegasus design, adding only a set of small capitals and an italic for each weight.

Wolpe Pegasus makes for a distinctive text typeface in books, journals and a variety of online content. Each letter looks as if it was honed by hand. Side by side in words and blocks of copy, however, they work beautifully.

dT Jakob started as a revival by Gustavo Soares for Paul van der Laan’s class at the Type and Media Masters, in The Hague, NL – back in 2007. There are quite a few excellent geometric sans typefaces available, but we did want to make our contribution and have a fine geometric face to offer. dT Jakob was born out of Erbar, by Jakob Erbar, one of the very first geometric sans, released in metal around 1926. Our goal was to make a versatile typeface, that handles display and text typography beautifully. To achieve that we designed a complete range of weights, matching italics and lots of OpenType Features. Hope you enjoy it :D
